Ideas for an unforgettable summer with your family
Summer is quickly approaching! The weather is getting warmer, school is beginning to wind down, and soon your kids will be home all day, everyday! Now is the time to start making plans for an unforgettable summer by purposefully making memories.
Here are 3 ideas for an unforgettable summer with your family. I hope that these ideas will help your family to make memories together as a family as well as be boredom busters for your kids.
Kids LOVE theme days. From dressing in specific color to having a Hawaiian Themed party-they get into it! Why not build excitement this summer by planning a few theme days for your family?
It doesn’t have to be anything crazy elaborate or expensive. Just choose a theme you think your kids will enjoy and talk about it A LOT! Build the anticipation.
Maybe you could do Wacky Wednesdays with your family. Each Wednesday plan a fun theme for your family to do. For example you could have a color day where you and your kids wear a specific color. You could make a dinner that incorporates that color. Go for a walk and find things in nature that are that color. Read a book about colors.
There are so many fun theme days that you could do with your family to add a little extra fun to summer. Let your kids help plan these! They will love getting to choose themes they love and it will also give you some time to work on a project as a family!
Summer Bucket List
Speaking of working together as a family to write down ideas for themes, why don’t you and your family come up with a Summer Bucket List. Write down adventures that your kids would like to do this summer and see if by the time school comes back how many items you cross off your list!
Your family’s list could include going to the zoo, playing at the local playground, participating in Vacation Bible School, going on vacation, taking a walk, going to a ball game, and so much more!
This can also be a great summer writing project for older kids. Have them write down 3 things they would like to do at home this summer, 3 things they would like to do around town this summer, 3 places they would like to visit this summer, and 3 places they’d like to eat at this summer. Explain to your kids that you might not be able to do EVERYTHING on the list, but to write down their dreams! They will feel like a valued member of the family and will most likely want to participate in family outings this summer.
Now I know what some of you are thinking-camping is NOT for my family. We do not like bugs, we do not like the heat, we do not like getting stuck in a leaky tent while it rains for 5 days straight. I get it-camping isn’t for everyone!
Now if your family ENJOYS camping-go for it! It can be a great time of family bonding and learning new skills! Have fun!
But for those of you who don’t really care for camping, do not own a tent, or don’t want to spend the money on camping-I still have some ideas for you!
Kids love when you change up a routine for a short amount of time-it adds excitement to their lives. So, why not go camping in your house?! Have your kids help make an indoor ‘tent’ with blankets and pillows, get out some sleeping bags (if you have them), and enjoy a night of living room camping.
This seems like a super simple-not overly exciting idea, but I promise you most kids will LOVE getting to camp-out on the living room floor as a family! You could always make some microwave s’mores for an added bonus!
Make Some Memories
So, what are you going to do to start making memories this summer as a family? Will you plan some theme days, make a bucket list, camp, or something else? No matter how your family decides to spend the summer, just remember that you only get 18 summers (or so) with your kids. Make the most of the time you have with them.
