Does God hear and answer my prayers?

Ever asked, “Does God hear my prayer and will he answer it?” I know I have.

The answer is yes…with some caveats.

God promises to hear and respond to the prayers of his people, when they pray in the name of his Son and according to his will.

Consider God’s promises concerning prayer.

Reference: The following is an excerpt from the Dictionary of Bible Themes.

God expects his people to make requests of him in prayer.

7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Matthew 7:7-11 ESV

22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”

Matthew 21:22 ESV

God promises to answer prayer in the name of Jesus Christ.

13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

John 14:13–14 ESV

16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

John 15:16 ESV

God promises to respond to the prayers of his people in times of need.

14  “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name.  15  When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.  16  With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Psalm 91:14–16 ESV

14  Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High,  15  and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

Psalm 50:14–15 ESV

God promises to hear the prayers of the oppressed.

17  O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear

Psalm 10:17 ESV

17  When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst,  I the Lord will answer them; I the God of Israel will not forsake them.

Isaiah 41:17 ESV

God promises to hear the prayers of the truly penitent (repentant).

14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV

37 “Thus says the Lord God: This also I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them: to increase their people like a flock.

Ezekiel 36:37 ESV

God promises to hear the prayers of his obedient people.

22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.

1 John 3:22 ESV

The need in prayer to have confidence in God’s promises:

24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Mark 11:24 ESV

14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.

1 John 5:14 ESV

19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.

Matthew 18:19 ESV

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. - Ephesians 2:8-9
