What is Easter Sunday About?

Most people are familiar with Easter Sunday traditions like bunnies, egg hunts, and honey-glazed ham dinners. I love our Easter Sunday traditions, but as with most holidays, the real meaning can get lost in the celebration.

Easter Sunday is often referred to as Resurrection Sunday, and is the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

History and Prophecy

Jesus’ Resurrection is the fulfillment of prophecy over thousands of years of Jewish history. They were awaiting the coming of a Messiah (the expected king and deliverer of the Jews) who would be persecuted, die for their sins, and rise on the third day victorious death.

The most noteworthy prophecy is found in Isaiah 53.

Throughout his life and through his death and resurrection, Jesus proved he was the long-awaited Messiah and savior to the world (not just Jewish people).

Easter Really Matters

Easter is the most significant event in all of Christianity. Jesus’ resurrection is the hinge that holds the faith together. Believing in Jesus’ resurrection is not an optional doctrine for a Christian, rather it is foundational.

You can read the resurrection story for yourself in Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20.

Our Beliefs

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. - Ephesians 2:8-9
