What is the work of God?
“Then they asked him, ‘What must we do to do the works God requires?’ Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” John 6:28-29
The first time I read this verse my entire mind, body, and soul took a collective sigh of relief. Oh, the rest!
Jesus Did Great Things
At this particular moment in the Gospel of John the disciples have just witnessed two miracles. The first miracle was when Jesus feeds five thousand men plus women and children. The second miracle was Jesus walking on water. With these miracles fresh in their minds the disciples wanted to know what God requires.
They are amazed that Jesus could walk on water. They ate till their stomachs were full with the five thousand.
Jesus then tells them in verse 27 not to work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which He will give.
Now they want to know his expectation for them. It seems they were willing to do anything to have their stomachs full of bread that lasts forever. How can they receive what Jesus is offering? What must they do to do the work of God?
Sit Down and Let Me Work
Jesus’ answer was a lot simpler than they expected. Jesus’ answer was a lot simpler than you and I expect too. He simply said, believe in me.
Our faith doesn’t have to be overly complicated. We don’t need to pretend like we’re earning salvation. Jesus asks for our hearts. My heart. Your heart. Faith.
Are you doing the work of God today? Are you simply choosing to believe in the One he has sent?
Jesus has accomplished the work. Let’s rest at the well.
